In the 19th century, British brewers started adding extra lupulin (hops) to beers, to insure they withstood the long journey around the Horn of Africa, to the colonized regions of India. Today, the use of hops in beers has evolved far beyond its original preservation function. The bold flavors and increased bitterness that the hops provide have turned hoppy beers into one of the most popular beer styles.
